Steel Lovers: Columbus Re-Introduces Max and Minimax

Columbus has re-introduced Max and Minimax tubesets using modern metallurgy.

By the way, I also have a small blog, named "Columbus MAX Bikes", where I have been collecting photos of Max, MXL (Max for Eddy Merckx), and Minimax bikes . Why? Because they are great steel bikes and the ovalized tubes make it interesting.

  1. Columbus Max reminds us of an old story from the daze we worked for another bike tour company. We had a regular client, a good-sized guy, who complained about the poor handling of his standard-sized-tube bike frames, even those built by respected builders like Waterford. Larry had seen the MAX bikes being used by Motorola's bigger boyz and suggested this fellow have one of those built, confident it would be just the thing for this hard-charging (especially on the descents) fellow. A few years later in the Alps, Heather told Larry this fellow was looking for him....this was his first ride on this bike under these challenging conditions and Larry's fear was he was going to tell him he was full of s--t ... he hated this bike.
Since we're telling the story you've already guessed the opposite was true...he said "this is the best handling bike I've EVER ridden, thanks so much for talking me into getting it!" It's great to read MAX tubes are back and that Columbus seems to be selling a LOT of steel tubing these days!
